Why The Berth Usually Stays Open

Releasing a berth for an inspection is expensive, so most owners ask whether the survey can be done around normal operations. In practice it usually can, provided the work is planned against the terminal's movement schedule rather than against the diving team's convenience.

The planning question is not 'how long does the inspection take' but 'how many usable windows exist in the coming weeks, and how do we split the structure across them'.

What Controls The Working Window

Three constraints usually decide the schedule.

  • Vessel movements: berthing, unberthing and shifting all suspend diving alongside.
  • Tide and current: in estuary ports slack water often defines the practical window.
  • Visibility: low visibility increases the time needed per structure section.

Splitting The Structure

We divide the quay into numbered sections with fixed reference points, so partial surveys still produce a coherent record. Each section has its own video file, findings list and photographs, and the report is assembled section by section.

The advantage is comparability: a later inspection can be set against the previous one per section, which is what asset managers actually need for maintenance planning.

Documentation That Survives An Audit

Because nobody else sees the work, documentation is the deliverable. Time-stamped video, referenced stills and a defect register with locations allow a third party to verify what was found and what was done.
